90 Years and International Day 2019

Burwood Girls High School is celebrating its 90 Year Anniversary.
To mark the event, our annual International Day festival on Friday 5 April 2019, 10am to 2:30pm will be bigger than ever. International Day celebrates the harmony and diversity of the many cultures represented at our school.

  • Everyone will be wearing national dress or orange (the colour of Harmony Day). Visitors are welcome to wear national dress, too!
  • International foods will be on sale from around 11:40 am and from roving sellers from 10am. Stalls will be using tokens instead of money. See visitor information below.
  • International music and dance concerts from lunchtime onwards performed by our students.
  • We are very proud to announce a special performance on the day by Australian National Treasure, Christine Anu, at around 10am, after the Smoking Ceremony and Welcome to Country at around 9:45am.
  • Historical display of photos and artifacts from the school archives, all day on the basketball court (with the British Cafe).
  • Activity stalls: henna art, fortune telling, Chinese calligraphy, police community stall, plus various fun activities.
  • There will also be a Close the Gap whole school activity for the students at around 11:25am. Members of the public are welcome to watch.
  • Food stalls (from around 11:40am): South East Asian/Thai, Middle Eastern, Turkish, USA, French crepes and pastries, South Asian-Indian, Indonesian satay, Aussie BBQ and drinks, Chinese, Dutch, East European sweets, Pacific Islander, British Cafe, Coffee van, Greek, Mexican, Irish potatoes, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mauritian, Portuguese-Spanish-South American, Indigenous Australian.
  • Not for ourselves alone. All proceeds from International Day go to the school's Hands Across the Ocean charity program, to support the education of children and the empowerment of young women. The charities we are supporting in 2019 include: One Girl, i-India, The Children's Sanctuary in Cambodia, Jodie O’Shea House in Bali, The Indigenous Literacy Foundation and The Smith Family's Girls at the Centre program.
