The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award - Australia

Burwood Girls High School offers students the opportunity to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award Program.

The school has two trained leaders: Mr Alexander Richardson and Ms Rebecca Matthews. The coordinator is Alexander Richardson (Science Faculty).

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award program is a leading structured youth development program for young Australians between ages 14 and 25. The Award is a fully inclusive program and has no social, political, or religious affiliations. Each young person who takes part in the Award learns a skill, improves their physical wellbeing, volunteers in their community and goes on an adventure.

Students will be guided through the registration process by the Award Leaders after a Parent Information Evening is held. The Duke of Edinburgh Club is held at lunchtime on Thursdays in Lab 6. All students of all years are welcome to visit in order to ask questions relating to the Award.

The school also offers a training walk and an adventurous journey each year for the Bronze Award in the form of two overnight hikes, usually held in Term 4.

Silver and Gold Awards are also catered for at the school when appropriate.

Basic Structure of the Duke of Ed

Extra for the Major Section (on top of the 3 months for the above 3 sections) All participants must complete an additional 3 months in either Fitness/Physical Recreation, Skill or Volunteering. Participants who have not achieved a Bronze Award must complete an additional 6 months in either Fitness/Physical Recreation, Skill or Volunteering. Participants who have not achieved a Silver Award must complete an additional 6 months in either Fitness/Physical Recreation, Skill or Volunteering. Please note that participants who have completed Bronze but not Silver must undertake the additional 6 months for one Section.

Information Evening

An information evening for the Duke of Edinburgh Award is held each year in Term 1.

Attendance is not necessary to take part in the award scheme and all the information can be found online. It is simply for those parents who would like to have the award explained in person.
