Dear School Community
It has come to our attention that a local student was hit by a vehicle while navigating a busy intersection on route to Croydon train station.
This was during morning peak hour last Wednesday 30 October 2024. Thankfully, the student has avoided serious injury.
Whilst we investigate the situation, we urge the school community to be vigilant at all times and always choose safe options to walk to and from Croydon Station, taking advantage of the pedestrian crossings already in place. The attached map shows different options for pedestrians, to utilise the eight existing pedestrian crossings in various streets.
Pedestrians are among the most vulnerable road users.
Each year in NSW, there are around 1500 crashes involving pedestrians.
A pedestrian when hit by a vehicle travelling at 50km/hr is twice as likely to be fatally injured.
As pedestrians, what can we do to avoid being involved in a crash:
- Plan ahead and allow adequate travel time
- Always stop, scan, listen and think before crossing
- Avoid distractions such as headphones or mobile devices
- Never assume an approaching driver has seen you or will wait for you
- Choose safest places to cross (signalised intersections/pedestrian crossings)
- At intersections, check for turning vehicles before you step out or cross the road
